Tramonti once again hosted, in the summer of 2025 and for an additional consecutive year, the ESC project “Make It Green.” Eleven years have passed since the Association ACARBIO first launched these summer initiatives, whose inaugural edition dates back to 2014. The group volunteering project, part of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme, once again brought together young people from various countries around the world, engaged in community service and environmental protection activities.

From 14 July to 26 August 2025, volunteers from Romania, Slovakia, Martinique, the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, France, China, and Georgia gathered in Tramonti, on the Amalfi Coast, for the 2025 edition of “Make It Green,” funded by the European Solidarity Corps. The project was implemented thanks to the support of Progetto Zattera Blu as the coordinating organisation, the Municipality of Tramonti, which provided spaces and logistical support, and the Association ACARBIO as the hosting organisation. Collaboration with local entities was also fundamental, including the Association Gete, which offered volunteers the opportunity to actively participate in the “Historical Parade of the City of Tramonti,” a medieval reenactment representing the history of the main families of the area, and in the Wine Festival, a traditional summer event dedicated to local food and wine excellence and traditions.

The main objectives of the project were the protection of Tramonti’s terraced landscape and cultural heritage, support for rural development, and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles, while at the same time strengthening solidarity among young people through shared volunteering experiences. Over the course of six weeks, participants gained skills and awareness in the fields of sustainability, intercultural exchange, and community participation.

The first days were dedicated to orientation and familiarisation with the area; subsequently, volunteers began cleaning and maintenance activities in Tramonti’s public green spaces. They contributed to the enhancement of local cultural heritage by supporting the organisation of the Historical Parade, taking care of decorations and actively participating in the event, and collaborated in the Wine Festival, helping with preparation, implementation, and final clean-up. In addition, the group renovated a community space in the hamlet of Gete by creating murals on public walls and at the entrance of the municipal kindergarten, leaving a visible and lasting mark inspired by local nature, culture, and music.

Alongside cultural and community activities, environmental action represented a central element of the project. Volunteers carried out numerous clean-up operations throughout the municipal area, promoting awareness of recycling and waste reduction. Unexpectedly, they also had the opportunity to take part in beach monitoring activities for the protection of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). In collaboration with other ACARBIO volunteers, they participated in the nighttime surveillance of a nest. Due to adverse weather conditions, the nest was manually relocated and it was not possible to directly witness the hatching of the eggs; however, the volunteers took part in the controlled release of the hatchlings into the sea. Over the course of six days, all the turtles were safely released.

By the end of the project, the volunteers had collected a total of approximately 370 kilograms of waste, carefully sorted for recycling, while also strengthening intercultural bonds and contributing to concrete and lasting improvements for the local community.

The 2025 edition of “Make It Green” thus combined environmental protection, enhancement of cultural heritage, and solidarity, leaving a significant impact both on the territory of Tramonti and on the young participants.

  • Collaborazione alla Festa del Vino, dalla preparazione alla gestione e alla pulizia finale.
  • Riqualificazione artistica di spazi comunitari nella frazione di Gete, con murales su muri pubblici e all’ingresso della scuola dell’infanzia comunale.
  • Sensibilizzazione ambientale attraverso azioni concrete e coinvolgimento della comunità.
  • Partecipazione al monitoraggio delle spiagge e alle attività di tutela della Caretta caretta.
  • Raccolta di circa 370 kg di rifiuti, correttamente separati per il riciclo.

La seconda fase di Make it Blue, progetto di volontariato di gruppo, inserito all’interno del programma Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà è nata dalla collaborazione di ACARBIO in qualità di host con l’organizzazione Volontarius OdV come ruolo di coordinatore (LEAD). Questa seconda fase ha visto volontari provenienti da Francia, Spagna, Romania, Georgia, Turchia, Grecia e Italia. Questa iniziativa è finalizzata a sostenere la comunità locale attraverso una serie di attività che non solo apportano benefici a livello locale, ma promuovono anche lo scambio culturale e la consapevolezza ambientale. 

 

 

Gli obiettivi principali durante il progetto sono stati: 

  • conoscere meglio i temi dell’inquinamento marino e della tutela dell’ambiente attraverso attività pratiche di pulizia delle spiagge; 
  • imparare a conoscere il patrimonio culturale locale e sostenere la comunità locale per diffondere la conoscenza ai visitatori e ai giovani; 
  • rafforzare le capacità di lavoro di squadra, di leadership e di comunicazione collaborando alle attività locali; 
  • sperimentare la vita comunitaria seguendo metodi sostenibili (riduzione dei rifiuti, consumo responsabile, riciclaggio); 
  • sperimentare lo scambio culturale e ampliare le proprie prospettive lavorando con volontari provenienti da contesti diversi. 

 

Tre indimenticabili settimane in cui i partecipanti hanno avuto la possibilità di fare esperienze in diversi campi culturali ed ecosostenibili.

Durante i primi giorni i volontari si sono focalizzati maggiormente in attività di conoscenza dei compagni di squadra e del luogo, iniziando poi con le vere azioni di pulizia delle spiagge pubbliche di Maiori. 

In particolare durante questo progetto i volontari hanno contribuito alla promozione del patrimonio culturale nel museo di Palazzo Mezzacapo a Maiori con i suoi splendidi affreschi, e giardini, alla riapertura del complesso abbaziale di Santa Maria de Olearia, accogliendo i molteplici turisti, oltre a creare e guidare un tour gratuito per chiunque abbia voluto conoscere la città di Maiori;  alla ristrutturazione di uno spazio comunitario nella frazione di Ponteprimario, dipingendo muri, ringhiere, panchine e lasciando un ricordo indelebile alla comunità attraverso la decorazione di una delle panchine della piazza; alla decorazione di una panchina situata sul Lungomare di Maiori, alla pulizia delle spiagge per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’inquinamento del mare attraverso eventi, quiz e giochi organizzati dagli stessi volontari; alla promozione della solidarietà e dello scambio interculturale partecipando a serate di condivisione e convivialità alla scoperta delle culture dei diversi partecipanti e dei cittadini locali; Infine, con la partecipazione alle attività di monitoraggio del nido di tartaruga Caretta caretta durante la schiusa delle uova, i volontari si sono assicurati che i piccoli esemplari raggiungessero il mare in modo sicuro. Quest’attività ha supportato il Centro Zoologico Anton Dohrn e l’AMP Punta Campanella, oltre a contribuire a far comprendere, attraverso un’esperienza pratica e a contatto con esseri viventi, l’importanza delle azioni umane sulle specie animali. 

I volontari del secondo gruppo hanno contribuito, insieme a quelli del primo e del terzo, nei mesi di giugno, luglio e settembre, a ottenere un risultato complessivo per l’estate 2024 di circa 200 sacchi di spazzatura, di cui 13.500 cicche di sigarette, avendo cura di separare i rifiuti per garantire un’ottima raccolta differenziata.

  • Eventi pubblici di beach clean-up e sensibilizzazione ambientale;
  • Beach clean-up circa 4 giorni a settimana;
  • Supporto giornaliero all’accoglienza presso il museo di Palazzo Mezzacapo
  • Creazione di un City Tour di Maiori gratuito e giornaliero (https://www.acarbio.org/makeitblue/)
  • Apertura straordinaria e gestione del complesso abbaziale di Santa Maria de Olearia per un totale di 4 durante il mese di Agosto
  • Attività di recupero di spazi pubblici presso il borgo di Ponteprimario (pitturazione delle panchine e ringhiere) e il Lungomare di Maiori
  • Monitoraggio del nido di tartarughe Caretta Caretta e rilascio degli esemplari nel loro habitat naturale

]]> L’estate 2024 ha segnato il ritorno di “Make It Blue” in costiera amalfitana. Il progetto di volontariato di gruppo, inserito all’interno del programma Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà, ha visto oltre 45 volontari internazionali impegnati in azioni a favore della comunità e dell’ambiente, divisi in tre gruppi che si sono alternati dal 14 giugno al 24 settembre 2024.

GRUPPO 1

Dal 14 giugno al 29 luglio ragazzi provenienti da Serbia, Svezia, Norvegia, Repubblica Ceca, Italia, Portogallo, Turchia, Spagna, Francia e Germania si sono trovati a Maiori, in Costiera Amalfitana per un progetto di volontariato di gruppo chiamato “Make it Blue”, un progetto finanziato da Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà.

Questa prima fase del progetto è nata da una collaborazione con l’organizzazione Progetto Zattera Blu Società Cooperativa Sociale Onlus nel ruolo di coordinatore (LEAD) e l’associazione ACARBIO in qualità di host.

Inoltre durante lo svolgimento del progetto si è avuta una straordinaria collaborazione con vari enti pubblici ed organizzazioni locali tra cui: Comune di Maiori, la congregazione delle Suore Domenicane “Figlie del S. Rosario di Pompei”, AMP Punta Campanella, Stanzione zoologica Anton Dhorn di Napoli ed ENPA Costa D’Amalfi, con i quali sono state svolte le diverse attività a cui i volontari hanno partecipato con grande entusiasmo.

Sei indimenticabili settimane in cui i partecipanti hanno avuto la possibilità di fare esperienze in diversi campi culturali ed ecosostenibili.

Durante i primi giorni i volontari si sono focalizzati maggiormente in attività basate sulla conoscenza del luogo, iniziando poi con le vere azioni di pulizia delle spiagge libere di Maiori. 

In particolare durante questo progetto i volontari hanno contribuito  alla promozione del patrimonio culturale nel museo di Palazzo Mezzacapo a Maiori con i suoi splendidi affreschi e giardini, accogliendo i molteplici turisti, oltre a creare e guidare un tour gratuito per chiunque abbia voluto conoscere la città di Maiori; alla ristrutturazione di uno spazio comunitario nella frazione di Ponteprimario, dipingendo muri, ringhiere, panchine e lasciando un ricordo indelebile alla comunità attraverso la decorazione di una delle panchine della piazza; alla pulizia delle spiagge per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’inquinamento del mare attraverso eventi, quiz e giochi organizzati dagli stessi volontari; alla pulizia di alcuni sentieri collaborando con l’associazione locale Hiking the Amalfi Coast ed un gruppo scout dalla Francia; alla promozione della solidarietà e dello scambio interculturale partecipando a serate di condivisione e convivialità alla scoperta delle culture dei diversi partecipanti e dei cittadini locali; supportando in attività per bambini presso il convento delle Suore Domenicane di Maiori; prendendo parte a diverse attività a supporto del comune di Maiori come ad esempio l’accoglienza presso il teatro del Mare, luogo di eventi musicali e culturali; infine avendo l’opportunità inaspettata di partecipare ad attività di monitoraggio della spiaggia per l’identificazione di tartarughe marina Caretta Caretta durante la nidificazione. 

 

 

I volontari del primo gruppo hanno contribuito, insieme a quelli dei due gruppi che si sono susseguiti nei mesi di agosto e settembre, a raggiungere un risultato complessivo per l’estate 2024 di circa 200 sacchi di spazzatura, di cui 13500 cicche di sigarette avendo cura di separare i rifiuti per un’ottima raccolta differenziata.

About the first flow

From 14th June to 29th July participants from Serbia, Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, France, Germany will stay in Maiori, Amalfi Coast to:

-Learn about sea pollution and environmental protection through hands-on beach clean-up activities;
-Learn about local cultural heritage and support the local community to spread the knowledge to visitors and young people;
-Enhance teamwork, leadership, and communication skills by collaborating on local activities;
-Experience community living and sharing by following sustainable practices (reduction of waste, responsible consumption, recycling);
-Experience cultural exchange and broaden perspectives by working with volunteers from different backgrounds.

In particular participants will contribute to the:
– promotion of cultural heritage in the local museum of Maiori with its beautiful frescos and the city garden;
– renovation of an abandoned community space in an old building;
– beach cleaning to raise awareness on the sea pollution;
– monitoring and activities on sea turtles
– environmental education and awareness raising activities;
– promoting solidarity and intercultural exchange;
– lead of a cultural city tour;
– other community activities to support the Municipality of Maiori.

]]> Sea and sky inside the kindergarten of Tramonti!

Together with a team of 20 international volunteers and the tattoo artists Stefano Liotti and Gaia Lembo; we worked to give the walls of the kindergarten “Scuola dell’Infanzia Raffaele Fierro” in Tramonti a new look.

In a first step, Stefano did a workshop for the volunteers on how to do sketches. Then we divided into groups to think of what to draw on the wall with sketches and present it to the others. During these 4 weeks , we also thought about which colors to put on the wall and paint.

]]> Also in the summer of 2022, from 4th of July to 31st of August Acarbio hosted and welcomed 2 groups of 14 European Solidarity Corps’ volunteers in Tramonti. One group came for each month, for the “Make it Green” project. The main objective of this project is to raise awareness on subjects like sustainability and the environmental issues we face in this region.

The main objectives were to organize environmental clean-ups and spread the green spirit, to create artistic murals in the local schools and to learn more about environmental impact and about intercultural competences. 

RESULTS

Main results include: 

  • More than 10 environmental cleanings;
  • 2 artistic workshops
  • Artistic graffiti in the local kindergarten;
  • Aristic graffiti in the local school theater;
  • 2 events to promote sustainability;
  • 2 hiking excursions to learn about the ecology and 2 hiking excursions to learn about the eno-gastronomy of Tramonti;
  • Communication content creation to promote environmental sustainability;
  • Intercultural nights of Hungary, Georgia, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey, Belgium, Croatia.

]]> In the summer of 2021, to be more exact from July 15 to September 06, Tramonti was filled with ideas, laughter and motivation, as 28 young people were visiting from four European countries. ACARBIO hosted the project Make it Blue.

The volunteers came in two separate groups, each one staying in Tramonti for four weeks. The participating organizations were Solidarity Tracks (Greece), Aventura Marao Clube (Portugal), ATA (Romania), IMAGINA (Spain, Malaga), Cocat (Spain, Barcelona), ExpoItaly (Italy), and Acarbio (Italy).

The topic of the project was sustainability and all activities aligned to the goal of raising awareness amongst the participants as well as the inhabitants of Tramonti. The Make it Blue team, as we called the volunteers, did a great job cleaning paths from trash, making abandoned paths accessible again by cleaning overgrown plants, painting dirty walls, and spreading good mood among the local people.

 

The first group of volunteers, which was in Tramonti from July 15 to August 10, had workshops on the importance of water pollution and saving water. They also painted signs and hung them all over Tramonti to make the inhabitants aware of the waste pollution and to motivate them to get rid of their trash in a sustainable way. A big project of Group 1 was the painting of the mural in the main square in Polvica. Joana Torgal, a participant of the project and artist, designed the wall painting and led the group of volunteers. The result is a beautifully made collage of paintings that represent the every-day life of the people of Tramonti. From the tomato plants, pizza makers and lemon trees, to the churches of Tramonti – all is included in the mural. Before their departure, the mayor of Tramonti, Domenico Amatruda, invited the participants and thanked them for their engagement and good work.

The second group of young people arrived on August 11 and stayed until September 06. They were very motivated and cleaned some areas from the trash. Additionally to the cleaning, they analysed the collected waste in a workshop; included activities were the counting of the different types of waste (cans, bottles, cigarette buts, paper napkins etc.) and research about their degradation time. Other activities involved painting of dirty walls and clearing an abandoned path from overgrown plants. Unfortunately, we had a Covid case and half of the time was spent in quarantine. Although many activities could not be realized, the volunteers still managed to stay positive and do the very best with the given situation. During quarantine, a group of them finished an art piece made from trash.

In the evenings we organized international nights. Participants from each country prepared an evening where they cooked traditional dishes, talked about their culture and country, showed the others typical music and dances and had a lot of fun.

In their free time, the young people had many opportunities to explore the area of the region of Campania. They visited Naples, Pompeii, the island of Capri, Amalfi, Positano and many other beautiful towns on the Amalfi Coast.

During their time in Tramonti, the volunteers learned a lot. Not only were they able to become more aware of environmental issues and gain an understanding for how to contribute to the solving of them. As they lived in an international community and had to cook for themselves, they learned how to communicate their own needs and work out problems, how to manage cooking for many people and how to minimize food waste and use up groceries. The second group of volunteers experienced community-life on a whole different level, as they spent some days of quarantine together with people from many different countries and cultures. With a great amount of creativity and patience they made the best out of it and gained lots of knowledge and experience. The participants also got to know many different cultures, dishes, and languages.

The project: what is Make it Blue?

Make it Blue is an environmental project about the preservation and enhancement of maritime resources which aims to keep the public beaches always clean and accessible to everybody. It is a place where environmental education takes place thanks to the help provided by young international volunteers who devote their time to citizens and tourists. Every day the volunteers take care of the beach, cleaning it, going around with a special pedal boat to sweep the sea and keep the water clean, and they also organize multilingual environmental workshops for children and teenagers 6 times per week.

Where and how?

The project has been going on for four years, since 2015, every summer in the public beach of Minori, in Amalfi Coast (South Italy) and it is organized by ACARBIO in collaboration with the municipality of Minori and YAP ITALIA (Youth Action for Peace). During this project, a group of 10 young people from different countries live, eat and sleep in the public school of Minori for 2 weeks. Normally, each project hosts 4 workcamps, which means around 40 people in total.  With this, young people have the opportunity to help the environment, while enjoying the Amalfi coast and experiencing Italy. Among the volunteers there are camp leaders, selected and possibly trained from YAP in organizing, guiding and connecting the group.

Daily activities and Flashmob

Our Make it Blue team is involved in cleaning the free access beaches of Minori 4 times per day, this means that they go around picking up the trash that is left by the visitors, separating it in plastic, paper, glass or mixed. The most common element that is found are the cigarette butts, which in the 2018 edition, arose to 9.000 pieces. With this situation, the volunteers prepared flashmobs to show the visitors and the inhabitants of Minori the pollution on the beaches.

In previous editions of the project, the team had a pedal boat, which was used two times per day, to catch the trash that was floating around in the water, with the help of some nets. This action helped to prevent fish and sea birds from eating plastic.

In addition to the cleaning done on the sand and in the water, the team held from 10 am to 12 pm, environmental workshop for kids, which attracted around a dozen of kids every day, who learned to identify the trash and recycle in a proper way, to name different sea animals and classify them, to know how to count or say their age in different languages, and practice their English by interactive games under the Make it Blue tent.

The importance of raising environmental awareness

With this project we are aiming to raise awareness of the situation present in thebeaches of Minori, to all the people who visit the town and the volunteers that participate in it. We hope that every year, after the project ends, there is a feeling among the participants that we have helped the planet and made people reflect on their actions. We would be delighted to see this project expanding to other parts of the world, and together make the sea blue again!

]]> Libera, sempre pulita, gratuita e con servizi che vanno da un “Laboratorio ambientale” per i più piccoli alla diffusione delle attività di promozione territoriale per gli eventi culturali, con attività di sensibilizzazione sui temi ambientali. E uno studio finale: una ricerca sull’impatto del volontariato internazionale sulle comunità, il patrimonio e i volontari stessi. Ecco la spiaggia libera di Minori: un luogo in Costiera amalfitana diventato da tre anni un modello di arenile totalmente libero e con servizi – si trovano anche porta-ombrelloni, doccia, passerella in legno – grazie al progetto “Make it Blue” dell’associazione Acarbio in collaborazione con Yap Italia e il sostegno del Comune di Minori. Più di venti i giovani volontari che arrivano da tutto il mondo e che divisi in due gruppi compongono il workcamp internazionale.

Pedalò Make it Blue

 

La spiaggia libera diventa così un luogo di condivisione anche delle diverse attività svolte durante tutto l’anno da chi si occupa di questo territorio.

I cittadini si riappropriano così di un luogo pubblico e gratuito per tutti. I volontari, facilmente identificabili con una pettorina blu e la scritta “Make it blue”, ogni giorno dalle ore 8 fino al tramonto, sorvegliano e controllano la pulizia della spiaggia. Con un pedalò spazzamare, assicurano poi anche la pulizia del tratto di mare. Così come del lungomare e del centro storico. Un “laboratorio ambientale” per i più piccoli (dal martedì alla domenica, dalle ore 10 alle 12) sensibilizza su temi che riguardano l’ambiente e la sostenibilità ambientale, con giochi, disegni, immagini. Il workcamp di “Make it Blue” è stato anche selezionato da CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service) con il supporto di Erasmus+, per “Volunteer Path”. Il compito è anche quello di svolgere una ricerca sull’impatto del volontariato internazionale sulle comunità, il patrimonio e i volontari stessi. I volontari – quasi tutti studenti universitari – hanno ricevuto un questionario. Alla fine del progetto, un video racconterà cosa hanno fatto e imparato in questo lembo di Costiera amalfitana che cerca di diventare un vero modello di “turismo sostenibile”.

]]> DAL KENYA, RUSSIA, GERMANIA, SPAGNA E GRECIA: A TRAMONTI UN CAMPO-LABORATORIO DI SOSTENIBILITÀ AMBIENTALE “Make IT Green – Eco-building”, presso la sede di Acarbio, in collaborazione con Yap Italia.

Saranno sette i giovani provenienti da tutto il mondo – dal 19 al 31 marzo – che trascorreranno il periodo pasquale in Costiera amalfitana, in un modo del tutto nuovo. Impareranno anche grazie all’aiuto di Stavros, architetto greco e di Vivianna che fanno parte dell’organizzazione Cob.gr, come realizzare ad esempio, isolamenti termici con materiale naturale ed ecologico; come immaginare ambienti che siano sostenibili con gli elementi architettonici tradizionali; come riqualificare aree abbandonate con l’ausilio di elementi come legna e terra. Un’esperienza concreta e sul campo, che si arricchirà durante i momenti liberi della conoscenza di usi e tradizioni della Costa d’Amalfi, grazie all’ospitalità e al calore umano che in ogni occasione si è saputa donare.
