Tramonti once again hosted, in the summer of 2025 and for an additional consecutive year, the ESC project “Make It Green.” Eleven years have passed since the Association ACARBIO first launched these summer initiatives, whose inaugural edition dates back to 2014. The group volunteering project, part of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme, once again brought together young people from various countries around the world, engaged in community service and environmental protection activities.

From 14 July to 26 August 2025, volunteers from Romania, Slovakia, Martinique, the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, France, China, and Georgia gathered in Tramonti, on the Amalfi Coast, for the 2025 edition of “Make It Green,” funded by the European Solidarity Corps. The project was implemented thanks to the support of Progetto Zattera Blu as the coordinating organisation, the Municipality of Tramonti, which provided spaces and logistical support, and the Association ACARBIO as the hosting organisation. Collaboration with local entities was also fundamental, including the Association Gete, which offered volunteers the opportunity to actively participate in the “Historical Parade of the City of Tramonti,” a medieval reenactment representing the history of the main families of the area, and in the Wine Festival, a traditional summer event dedicated to local food and wine excellence and traditions.

The main objectives of the project were the protection of Tramonti’s terraced landscape and cultural heritage, support for rural development, and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles, while at the same time strengthening solidarity among young people through shared volunteering experiences. Over the course of six weeks, participants gained skills and awareness in the fields of sustainability, intercultural exchange, and community participation.

The first days were dedicated to orientation and familiarisation with the area; subsequently, volunteers began cleaning and maintenance activities in Tramonti’s public green spaces. They contributed to the enhancement of local cultural heritage by supporting the organisation of the Historical Parade, taking care of decorations and actively participating in the event, and collaborated in the Wine Festival, helping with preparation, implementation, and final clean-up. In addition, the group renovated a community space in the hamlet of Gete by creating murals on public walls and at the entrance of the municipal kindergarten, leaving a visible and lasting mark inspired by local nature, culture, and music.

Alongside cultural and community activities, environmental action represented a central element of the project. Volunteers carried out numerous clean-up operations throughout the municipal area, promoting awareness of recycling and waste reduction. Unexpectedly, they also had the opportunity to take part in beach monitoring activities for the protection of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). In collaboration with other ACARBIO volunteers, they participated in the nighttime surveillance of a nest. Due to adverse weather conditions, the nest was manually relocated and it was not possible to directly witness the hatching of the eggs; however, the volunteers took part in the controlled release of the hatchlings into the sea. Over the course of six days, all the turtles were safely released.

By the end of the project, the volunteers had collected a total of approximately 370 kilograms of waste, carefully sorted for recycling, while also strengthening intercultural bonds and contributing to concrete and lasting improvements for the local community.

The 2025 edition of “Make It Green” thus combined environmental protection, enhancement of cultural heritage, and solidarity, leaving a significant impact both on the territory of Tramonti and on the young participants.

La seconda fase di Make it Blue, progetto di volontariato di gruppo, inserito all’interno del programma Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà è nata dalla collaborazione di ACARBIO in qualità di host con l’organizzazione Volontarius OdV come ruolo di coordinatore (LEAD). Questa seconda fase ha visto volontari provenienti da Francia, Spagna, Romania, Georgia, Turchia, Grecia e Italia. Questa iniziativa è finalizzata a sostenere la comunità locale attraverso una serie di attività che non solo apportano benefici a livello locale, ma promuovono anche lo scambio culturale e la consapevolezza ambientale. 

Gli obiettivi principali durante il progetto sono stati: 

• conoscere meglio i temi dell’inquinamento marino e della tutela dell’ambiente attraverso attività pratiche di pulizia delle spiagge; 
• imparare a conoscere il patrimonio culturale locale e sostenere la comunità locale per diffondere la conoscenza ai visitatori e ai giovani; 
• rafforzare le capacità di lavoro di squadra, di leadership e di comunicazione collaborando alle attività locali; 
• sperimentare la vita comunitaria seguendo metodi sostenibili (riduzione dei rifiuti, consumo responsabile, riciclaggio); 
• sperimentare lo scambio culturale e ampliare le proprie prospettive lavorando con volontari provenienti da contesti diversi. 

Tre indimenticabili settimane in cui i partecipanti hanno avuto la possibilità di fare esperienze in diversi campi culturali ed ecosostenibili.

Durante i primi giorni i volontari si sono focalizzati maggiormente in attività di conoscenza dei compagni di squadra e del luogo, iniziando poi con le vere azioni di pulizia delle spiagge pubbliche di Maiori. 

In particolare durante questo progetto i volontari hanno contribuito alla promozione del patrimonio culturale nel museo di Palazzo Mezzacapo a Maiori con i suoi splendidi affreschi, e giardini, alla riapertura del complesso abbaziale di Santa Maria de Olearia, accogliendo i molteplici turisti, oltre a creare e guidare un tour gratuito per chiunque abbia voluto conoscere la città di Maiori;  alla ristrutturazione di uno spazio comunitario nella frazione di Ponteprimario, dipingendo muri, ringhiere, panchine e lasciando un ricordo indelebile alla comunità attraverso la decorazione di una delle panchine della piazza; alla decorazione di una panchina situata sul Lungomare di Maiori, alla pulizia delle spiagge per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’inquinamento del mare attraverso eventi, quiz e giochi organizzati dagli stessi volontari; alla promozione della solidarietà e dello scambio interculturale partecipando a serate di condivisione e convivialità alla scoperta delle culture dei diversi partecipanti e dei cittadini locali; Infine, con la partecipazione alle attività di monitoraggio del nido di tartaruga Caretta caretta durante la schiusa delle uova, i volontari si sono assicurati che i piccoli esemplari raggiungessero il mare in modo sicuro. Quest’attività ha supportato il Centro Zoologico Anton Dohrn e l’AMP Punta Campanella, oltre a contribuire a far comprendere, attraverso un’esperienza pratica e a contatto con esseri viventi, l’importanza delle azioni umane sulle specie animali. 

I volontari del secondo gruppo hanno contribuito, insieme a quelli del primo e del terzo, nei mesi di giugno, luglio e settembre, a ottenere un risultato complessivo per l’estate 2024 di circa 200 sacchi di spazzatura, di cui 13.500 cicche di sigarette, avendo cura di separare i rifiuti per garantire un’ottima raccolta differenziata.

Questo progetto è di supporto all’iniziativa principale denominata  M.A.R.E. (Marine Adventures Respecting the Environment) in cui giovani volontari europei svolgono attività tra primavera ed estate per nove mesi nell’area del parco. Nel caso di Supporting Team i volontari di ACARBIO provenienti da Belgio, Bulgaria, Francia, Grecia, Finlandia, Spagna, Tunisia e Italia si sono trovati a Nerano, Massa Lubrense dal 5 Novembre al 1° Dicembre in collaborazione con l’AMP Punta Campanella per supportare le attività autunnali, tra cui il controllo dell’erosione e la gestione della vegetazione locale, la rimozione di rifiuti per mantenere un ambiente pulito e sano promuovendo uno stile di vita ecosostenibile e all’insegna del rispetto degli ecosistemi, lo studio della Posidonia Oceanica, pianta marina endemica del Mediterraneo importantissima per la conservazione degli ecosistemi.  

Gli obiettivi: I principali obiettivi durante il progetto sono stati: imparare a vivere in modo cooperativo in uno spazio condiviso, gestendo la vita quotidiana insieme come una famiglia;  sviluppare abilità per lavorare insieme, risolvere problemi e comunicare efficacemente in un contesto comunitario; adottare abitudini eco-compatibili nella vita quotidiana, come ridurre i rifiuti, conservare le risorse e rispettare l’ambiente; acquisire esperienza pratica nella gestione e conservazione delle aree protette locali, comprese le conoscenze delle pratiche ambientali; comprendere l’importanza di proteggere le aree naturali e imparare tecniche per supportare la sostenibilità degli ecosistemi; 

Le attività

Le attività sono state variegate e hanno visto la collaborazione anche con altri enti del territorio. Le azioni principali hanno previsto:

• La collaborazione con il FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano)

La collaborazione dei volontari con gli operatori locali del FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) nella Baia di Ieranto, contribuendo alla conservazione e alla manutenzione del sito, una delle aree naturali più straordinarie e protette della penisola Sorrentina. Lavorando insieme agli agricoltori che da decenni operano in questa regione, il team ha appreso sia le tecniche agricole locali che la ricca storia del territorio. Questa baia, nota per la sua straordinaria importanza ecologica e storica, è un’area protetta, casa di una flora e fauna marina uniche. Poiché gli obiettivi di questa collaborazione con il FAI includono la conservazione della vegetazione autoctona e la sensibilizzazione dei visitatori per promuovere un turismo ecologicamente consapevole e rispettoso, durante questa settimana i volontari hanno imparato come prendersi cura dell’uliveto. 

• Monitoraggio della Posidonia Oceanica

I volontari hanno combinato il lavoro manuale con la ricerca, supportando gli sforzi dell’Area Marina Protetta nel monitorare la qualità ambientale marina, promuovendo allo stesso tempo la consapevolezza sulla sua importanza ecologica. In particolare, hanno analizzato e catalogato campioni di Posidonia oceanica. Questa attività contribuisce agli sforzi di ricerca locali per ottenere dati estesi e migliorare la conoscenza di questa pianta vitale, ma ancora poco studiata.

• Le attività di giardinaggio

Durante il periodo del progetto, i volontari del progetto M.A.R.E Supporting Team hanno svolto anche un’altra attività importante: la ristrutturazione del giardino della casa, un’esperienza significativa per loro. Non si trattava solo di lavorare all’aperto, ma di creare qualcosa di duraturo per i futuri volontari. Il giardino fornirà uno spazio per coltivare frutta e verdura, offrendo loro cibo fresco e sano che coltiveranno personalmente. Questa attività ha insegnato ai volontari il valore del lavoro di squadra e della cura della natura. Hanno imparato quanta fatica e attenzione sia necessaria per far crescere le piante, stabilendo un legame reale e personale con l’ambiente. Prendersi cura del giardino riflette anche i valori del progetto di sostenibilità e protezione della biodiversità.

• Formazione sui Cetacei 

I volontari hanno inoltre partecipato a sessioni di formazione sui cetacei organizzate dall’Area Marina Protetta di Punta Campanella, per apprendere l’importanza di monitorare queste specie e come agire in caso di avvistamento. Questa attività aveva l’obiettivo di aumentare la conoscenza dei giovani volontari sulla biodiversità marina e promuovere una maggiore comprensione ecologica. Imparando a riconoscere e monitorare queste specie e cosa fare se le avvistano, i volontari hanno acquisito conoscenze preziose su come prendersi cura della vita marina. La formazione li ha aiutati a comprendere le sfide che i cetacei devono affrontare, come l’inquinamento e i cambiamenti climatici, e come gli esseri umani possano fare la differenza. È stata un’attività molto importante per i volontari, poiché i cetacei, come delfini e balene, sono una parte fondamentale della biodiversità marina, e comprenderli aiuta a proteggere l’ecosistema degli oceani. Questa attività non solo insegna ai volontari competenze pratiche, ma approfondisce anche il loro rispetto per il mare e le sue creature.

• La conferenza

Un’altra attività importante per i volontari del progetto è stata la partecipazione, il 21 novembre, a una conferenza sulla biologia della conservazione marina, presso l’Istituto Sant’Anna di Sorrento, tenuta da studenti americani e suddivisa in due sezioni. La prima sezione si è concentrata sulla conservazione dei nidi delle tartarughe marine (Progetto Turtlenest). Il Progetto Turtlenest, parte del programma LIFE dell’UE, si concentra sulla conservazione delle tartarughe marine, in particolare delle tartarughe Caretta Caretta, in tutta la regione del Mediterraneo. Questa iniziativa mira a proteggere e monitorare i siti di nidificazione, educare le comunità e sensibilizzare sull’importante ruolo che le tartarughe marine giocano negli ecosistemi marini. Gli sforzi principali includono la valutazione delle abitudini di nidificazione, la protezione degli habitat e la riduzione delle minacce derivanti dalle attività umane, come l’inquinamento, lo sviluppo costiero e l’inquinamento luminoso, che può disorientare le piccole tartarughe appena nate. Il team di ACARBIO è stato felice di condividere la propria esperienza estiva con i nidi di due tartarughe e la schiusa di centinaia di piccole Caretta caretta. Qui, i volontari hanno imparato gli sforzi per proteggere i nidi delle tartarughe marine, le sfide che queste specie affrontano e l’importanza di preservare i loro habitat per le generazioni future. La seconda sezione ha esplorato “gli impatti umani sull’ambiente marino” e quanto le persone siano consapevoli di questi problemi. Questa sessione ha evidenziato gli effetti dell’inquinamento, della pesca eccessiva e dei cambiamenti climatici sugli ecosistemi marini, discutendo anche le modalità per educare e coinvolgere le comunità nella riduzione di questi impatti. 

• La pulizia delle spiagge 

Un altro componente fondamentale di questo programma è stato la pulizia delle spiagge e dei sentieri escursionistici della regione. Rimuovendo rifiuti e plastica dalle aree pubbliche e protette, i volontari hanno contribuito a preservare questi ambienti naturali e gli ecosistemi, riducendo l’impatto ambientale dei materiali inquinanti e migliorando l’esperienza per residenti e visitatori. Con due giornate di pulizia nell’area dei Bagni Regina Giovanna a Sorrento, i volontari hanno raccolto in totale 39 kg di rifiuti, dalle bottiglie di plastica, mozziconi di sigaretta, fino a pneumatici e cavi elettrici. Un’intensa giornata di pulizia della spiaggia a Marina della Lobra, un piccolo villaggio di pescatori situato nel comune di Massa Lubrense. I volontari hanno lavorato insieme per rimuovere plastica, bottiglie, reti da pesca e altri rifiuti che potrebbero danneggiare animali come pesci, tartarughe e gabbiani. Durante la pulizia della spiaggia, i volontari hanno trovato una varietà di rifiuti, dimostrando quanto spazzatura possa accumularsi in un luogo così bello. Tra gli oggetti raccolti c’erano scatole di pizza, bottiglie di plastica, mozziconi di sigaretta, pezzi di polistirolo, frammenti di plastica, lattine, bottiglie di vetro, infradito, sacchetti di plastica, boe, corde da barca, occhiali da sole e anche tubi raccogliendo ben 80 kg in poche ore. Le attività di pulizia si sono concluse con quella nella baia di Crapolla, situata nel comune di Massa Lubrense, una piccola baia affacciata sul Golfo di Napoli dove i volontari hanno raccolto migliaia di pezzi di rifiuti probabilmente lasciati da alcuni visitatori ma soprattutto portati alla riva dalle mareggiate dei giorni precedenti, raggiungendo un peso complessivo di 27 kg. In sole quattro giornate di pulizia si sono raccolti quindi, da diversi punti della Penisola Sorrentina un totale di 146 kg di spazzatura, una quantità sorprendente che evidenzia l’impatto negativo che le nostre abitudini quotidiane possono avere sul pianeta, anche in luoghi apparentemente isolati e incontaminati. 

• L’evento di Eco-patrols

Come conclusione del progetto e per comprendere appieno gli impatti che gli esseri umani hanno sugli ecosistemi e sulle specie marine, i volontari hanno partecipato a un evento del progetto Eco-patrols nell’ambito del programma europeo Erasmus+, durante l’ultimo giorno del programma. L’evento ha incluso una conferenza sugli impatti ambientali, seguita da attività dimostrative divertenti e da un dibattito di gruppo in cui tutti hanno discusso ciò che hanno imparato e compreso durante l’intero periodo di volontariato.

GRUPPO 1

Dal 14 giugno al 29 luglio ragazzi provenienti da Serbia, Svezia, Norvegia, Repubblica Ceca, Italia, Portogallo, Turchia, Spagna, Francia e Germania si sono trovati a Maiori, in Costiera Amalfitana per un progetto di volontariato di gruppo chiamato “Make it Blue”, un progetto finanziato da Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà.

Questa prima fase del progetto è nata da una collaborazione con l’organizzazione Progetto Zattera Blu Società Cooperativa Sociale Onlus nel ruolo di coordinatore (LEAD) e l’associazione ACARBIO in qualità di host.

Inoltre durante lo svolgimento del progetto si è avuta una straordinaria collaborazione con vari enti pubblici ed organizzazioni locali tra cui: Comune di Maiori, la congregazione delle Suore Domenicane “Figlie del S. Rosario di Pompei”, AMP Punta Campanella, Stanzione zoologica Anton Dhorn di Napoli ed ENPA Costa D’Amalfi, con i quali sono state svolte le diverse attività a cui i volontari hanno partecipato con grande entusiasmo. 

Gli obiettivi principali durante il progetto sono stati: conoscere meglio i temi dell’inquinamento marino e della tutela dell’ambiente attraverso attività pratiche di pulizia delle spiagge; imparare a conoscere il patrimonio culturale locale e sostenere la comunità locale per diffondere la conoscenza ai visitatori e ai giovani; rafforzare le capacità di lavoro di squadra, di leadership e di comunicazione collaborando alle attività locali; sperimentare la vita comunitaria seguendo metodi sostenibili (riduzione dei rifiuti, consumo responsabile, riciclaggio); sperimentare lo scambio culturale e ampliare le proprie prospettive lavorando con volontari provenienti da contesti diversi. 

Sei indimenticabili settimane in cui i partecipanti hanno avuto la possibilità di fare esperienze in diversi campi culturali ed ecosostenibili.

Durante i primi giorni i volontari si sono focalizzati maggiormente in attività basate sulla conoscenza del luogo, iniziando poi con le vere azioni di pulizia delle spiagge libere di Maiori. 

In particolare durante questo progetto i volontari hanno contribuito  alla promozione del patrimonio culturale nel museo di Palazzo Mezzacapo a Maiori con i suoi splendidi affreschi e giardini, accogliendo i molteplici turisti, oltre a creare e guidare un tour gratuito per chiunque abbia voluto conoscere la città di Maiori; alla ristrutturazione di uno spazio comunitario nella frazione di Ponteprimario, dipingendo muri, ringhiere, panchine e lasciando un ricordo indelebile alla comunità attraverso la decorazione di una delle panchine della piazza; alla pulizia delle spiagge per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’inquinamento del mare attraverso eventi, quiz e giochi organizzati dagli stessi volontari; alla pulizia di alcuni sentieri collaborando con l’associazione locale Hiking the Amalfi Coast ed un gruppo scout dalla Francia; alla promozione della solidarietà e dello scambio interculturale partecipando a serate di condivisione e convivialità alla scoperta delle culture dei diversi partecipanti e dei cittadini locali; supportando in attività per bambini presso il convento delle Suore Domenicane di Maiori; prendendo parte a diverse attività a supporto del comune di Maiori come ad esempio l’accoglienza presso il teatro del Mare, luogo di eventi musicali e culturali; infine avendo l’opportunità inaspettata di partecipare ad attività di monitoraggio della spiaggia per l’identificazione di tartarughe marina Caretta Caretta durante la nidificazione. 

I volontari del primo gruppo hanno contribuito, insieme a quelli dei due gruppi che si sono susseguiti nei mesi di agosto e settembre, a raggiungere un risultato complessivo per l’estate 2024 di circa 200 sacchi di spazzatura, di cui 13500 cicche di sigarette avendo cura di separare i rifiuti per un’ottima raccolta differenziata.

About the first flow

From 14th June to 29th July participants from Serbia, Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, France, Germany will stay in Maiori, Amalfi Coast to:

-Learn about sea pollution and environmental protection through hands-on beach clean-up activities;
-Learn about local cultural heritage and support the local community to spread the knowledge to visitors and young people;
-Enhance teamwork, leadership, and communication skills by collaborating on local activities;
-Experience community living and sharing by following sustainable practices (reduction of waste, responsible consumption, recycling);
-Experience cultural exchange and broaden perspectives by working with volunteers from different backgrounds.

In particular participants will contribute to the:
– promotion of cultural heritage in the local museum of Maiori with its beautiful frescos and the city garden;
– renovation of an abandoned community space in an old building;
– beach cleaning to raise awareness on the sea pollution;
– monitoring and activities on sea turtles
– environmental education and awareness raising activities;
– promoting solidarity and intercultural exchange;
– lead of a cultural city tour;
– other community activities to support the Municipality of Maiori.

From 29th of April to 14th of May 2024 we held the fourth phase of the project and in this article we will tell you our progress during these 2 amazing weeks!

Here’s a small introduction to get started:

Roots & Roofs is Acarbio’s project with the objective of creating an educational centre in the forest that teaches about living in nature, outdoor and experiential learning, sustainability, natural building, and permaculture. The project has been initiated with the support of experts from the Greek organisation Cob.gr and it’s been carried out in several phases.

In this project we built a hobbit house, a tree house and an outdoor kitchen.

And now let’s get into the fourth phase

During the fourth phase participants from France, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Hungary, Sweden, Belgium, Italy and Germany arrived in Tramonti with the aim of being a part of the soul of this ecobuilding by actively participating in our TEAM ESC project.

During the first day of the project they started to get to know each other and the forest in which they would have to live for two weeks. The best thing to achieve this was a treasure hunt and other games. Here are some pictures:

For this fourth phase participants finalised the outdoor kitchen, made some improvements in the hobbit house and continued working on the tree house.

Now let’s get more into details in each area.

In the outdoor kitchen the first thing to do was to make the roof. Volunteers peeled the wood that would later support the beams and then put everything together.

At the same time other volunteers were working on plastering the actual kitchen, applying tadelakt (Moroccan technique that allows the creation of high quality natural decorative finishing for bathrooms, kitchens etc.) and then painting the kitchen.

Another group was working in the hobbit house. Here the task was similar to what was happening in the outdoor kitchen. First they started with the plastering and then they proceeded to cover with white paint all the walls except for one spot where one of the volunteers painted an amazing tree.

Then as in every house there is the bathroom that is actually the most magical area of the hobbit house. This is thanks to the patient work of the volunteers who used scrap tiles to create an outstanding mosaic. Using the same technique they also created a mirror with pieces of discarded glass. In between the pieces they played with colours to resemble the sun.

The work on the hobbit house wasn’t only on the inside. Others were also working on the outside, refreshing it with white paint.

And now we can go up to the tree house. Here the dome was already formed in the previous editions but the wood cells were still open. So our committed volunteers first cut the plywood with the specific shape of the cell, then they prepared the wood on the dome by smoothing it in order to install the plywood and closing the dome. In order to utilise natural light the dome was covered with plywood only in the lower half, while on the upper part the participants installed a transparent cover always in the shape of cells.

After finishing all the tasks in the three areas of the outdoor kitchen, hobbit house and tree house, in the last days of the project the participants made sure to make the eco building more welcoming and cosy by building handrests and creating a flower bed at the entrance to the hobbit house. Here volunteers planted flowers and wild trees they found in the forest around them and used empty tree trunks as vases.

And of course let’s not forget about the most important thing: the door!

Summer for ACARBIO was full of positive adventures. From July 12th until August 28th of 2023 ACARBIO hosted fourteen participants in Tramonti. The project “Make it Green”  was aimed to promote environmental protection and to raise awareness  about sustainability in this unique part of Italy.

Six unforgettable weeks spent in the beautiful nature of Tramonti. Each participant learned  a lot about living in community together, cooking together and organised free time together, created remarkable memories and grew up as individuals. During nights they were making cultural evenings, cooking their cultural food and inviting guests from Tramonti. They interacted with locals, helped with preparation of the wine festival and took part in medieval parade; this was a very unique and special experience for both volunteers and the residents of Tramonti, full of new adventures. Furthermore participants painted walls in the kindergarten with a local artist, while painting they were also transformed into their childhoods since the walls were decorated with caricatures that participants themself choose. The experience was unique and every day was something new and educational prepared for them. They received mentoring as well as Italian classes, this helped them to integrate better with each other as well as their new environment.

In conclusion the aim of the project which was to: organise clean-ups, create artistic painting in the kindergarten, integrate  with the local community, promote green lifestyle and learn about each other’s cultures was successfully achieved and has ever lasting impact which it was meant to have.

Natural Building Techniques

Natural building techniques are ways of constructing buildings using materials that we can find in nature around us. Natural builders use clay, straw, wood, and stones for instance. These materials are often eco-friendly and easy to find locally. Natural building techniques aim to create buildings that are sustainable, energy-efficient, and in harmony with the environment. To achieve our goal with methods like wattle and daub, adobe bricks, and hyperadobe technique with earth bags we needed experts to guide us trough the process. That’s how our partnership with Cob.gr has begun. Members from their organisation are coordinating and helping from the phase of creating the plans to actually implementing them.

Roots & Roofs – How it all began

We held the first phase of the project in May 2023, welcoming volunteers for 2 weeks to create the foundations of a treehouse and a hobbithouse.

Roots & Roofs II

Roots & Roofs II was a TEAM ESC experience in June 2023. Volunteers continued building the eco-houses, working on tasks such as filling the walls with cobb; and constructing a platform and dome for the treehouse.

Roots & Roofs III

Roots & Roofs III was a TEAM ESC experience that took place between July and August 2023. During this phase, we focused on the construction of an outdoor kitchen with an indispensable pizza oven.

The final ecological centre is still to be completed, so stay tuned for the next steps!

The volunteers came in two separate groups, each one staying in Tramonti for four weeks. The participating organizations were Solidarity Tracks (Greece), Aventura Marao Clube (Portugal), ATA (Romania), IMAGINA (Spain, Malaga), Cocat (Spain, Barcelona), ExpoItaly (Italy), and Acarbio (Italy).

The topic of the project was sustainability and all activities aligned to the goal of raising awareness amongst the participants as well as the inhabitants of Tramonti. The Make it Blue team, as we called the volunteers, did a great job cleaning paths from trash, making abandoned paths accessible again by cleaning overgrown plants, painting dirty walls, and spreading good mood among the local people.

The first group of volunteers, which was in Tramonti from July 15 to August 10, had workshops on the importance of water pollution and saving water. They also painted signs and hung them all over Tramonti to make the inhabitants aware of the waste pollution and to motivate them to get rid of their trash in a sustainable way. A big project of Group 1 was the painting of the mural in the main square in Polvica. Joana Torgal, a participant of the project and artist, designed the wall painting and led the group of volunteers. The result is a beautifully made collage of paintings that represent the every-day life of the people of Tramonti. From the tomato plants, pizza makers and lemon trees, to the churches of Tramonti – all is included in the mural. Before their departure, the mayor of Tramonti, Domenico Amatruda, invited the participants and thanked them for their engagement and good work.

The second group of young people arrived on August 11 and stayed until September 06. They were very motivated and cleaned some areas from the trash. Additionally to the cleaning, they analysed the collected waste in a workshop; included activities were the counting of the different types of waste (cans, bottles, cigarette buts, paper napkins etc.) and research about their degradation time. Other activities involved painting of dirty walls and clearing an abandoned path from overgrown plants. Unfortunately, we had a Covid case and half of the time was spent in quarantine. Although many activities could not be realized, the volunteers still managed to stay positive and do the very best with the given situation. During quarantine, a group of them finished an art piece made from trash.

In the evenings we organized international nights. Participants from each country prepared an evening where they cooked traditional dishes, talked about their culture and country, showed the others typical music and dances and had a lot of fun.

In their free time, the young people had many opportunities to explore the area of the region of Campania. They visited Naples, Pompeii, the island of Capri, Amalfi, Positano and many other beautiful towns on the Amalfi Coast.

During their time in Tramonti, the volunteers learned a lot. Not only were they able to become more aware of environmental issues and gain an understanding for how to contribute to the solving of them. As they lived in an international community and had to cook for themselves, they learned how to communicate their own needs and work out problems, how to manage cooking for many people and how to minimize food waste and use up groceries. The second group of volunteers experienced community-life on a whole different level, as they spent some days of quarantine together with people from many different countries and cultures. With a great amount of creativity and patience they made the best out of it and gained lots of knowledge and experience. The participants also got to know many different cultures, dishes, and languages.
